The Select Committee of Tynwald on Poverty has recently published its report into Housing and Homelessness(PP 2024/0007).

Continuing the work of the Select Committee on Poverty 2018-2021, this forms the third report in a series of inquiries to recognise and respond to the existence of relative poverty on the Isle of Man. Identifying that housing had been one of the biggest social issues leading up to the 2021 General Election, the Committee set out to investigate and make recommendations on the insufficient progress made to improving both the affordability and accessibility of housing on the Island.

Reflecting upon the report, Committee Chair Juan Watterson SHK, said that:

Two years after an election defined by a housing and cost of living crisis, progress from Government has been slow. The Poverty Report and its 32 Recommendations chart a way forward to help address the housing crisis, especially for the lowest earners in society.

This has been two years of evidence gathering, and I am very grateful to the co-authors of this report, Miss August-Hanson, Ms Faragher and Mrs Maltby for their hard work and dedication to the cause. We look forward to debating this report and its recommendations in Tynwald.

The report and the recommendations will be considered and debated at the April 2024 sitting of Tynwald.
