A Committee of young people are to question experts and politicians about the commitment to tackle the need for ‘lifelong learning as a fundamental part of economic and social success for the Island’ as identified in Our Island Plan.

Formed in January 2025 this is the second Youth Select Committee on the Isle of Man which will tackle a new topic of inquiry while the first cohort concludes and reports on its inquiry into a suitable and affordable place to call home.

The Committee have now held their first meetings and have chosen to explore the educational, vocational, and developmental opportunities available on Island to young people leaving secondary or higher education (particularly those aged 16-25).

Through the examination of Government policy and initiatives, the Committee aims to identify why the Island continues to struggle with retaining its young adult population, and where change is required.

Formed of a group of seven Island residents, aged between 15 and 24, the Committee will meet monthly in Legislative Buildings.

Riona Zaman was elected by the group to take the role of Chairperson. Discussing her role on the Committee, Riona said:

“I believe that it is essential that the voices of the young people on our Island are listened to and advocated for, as we are the future of this Island. I believe that I and the rest of the members will do this effectively and bring about change that will positively impact future generations to come.”
