11/05/2023
Tynwald Members Daphne Caine MHK, Tim Glover MHK, Sarah Maltby MHK and delegation head Hon Chris Thomas MHK have returned from the 52nd Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) British Islands and Mediterranean Regional (BIMR) conference at Westminster.
Supported by the Deputy Clerk of Tynwald Jo Corkish, the Isle of Man delegation joined delegates from Alderney, Cyprus, Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Jersey, Malta, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales for the conference held between 25th and 28th April.
Topics explored the importance of promotion of inclusive parliaments and workplace equality networks and included workshops led by Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson and Jeremy Balfour MSP. Other topics explored how parliaments were moving to address the climate change emergency with speakers including Baroness Hayman, Co-Chair of Peers for the Planet, and Chris Venables, Deputy Director of Politics and Partnerships, Green Alliance Secretariat.
The conference also included a session on standards and behaviour, led by Daniel Greenberg CB, Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards UK.
Reflecting on the conference, Hon Chris Thomas MHK said: ‘I was pleased to lead this delegation and it seemed valuable for everyone to share experiences.’
Mrs Caine added: ‘It was an intensive and thought-provoking few days, discussing common challenges we all face and learning from shared experiences with parliamentarians from other islands and Celtic nations.’
Mrs Maltby said: ‘The topics covered in the BIMR conference were well timed with challenges currently being faced by Tynwald members. This gave rise to the opportunity to explore more deeply the common issues the smaller parliaments face. Being able to share learning with one another is invaluable.’
