Two exciting opportunities are currently open to young people who have an interest in parliament and parliamentary affairs. There is an opportunity to represent the Isle of Man at the Commonwealth Youth Parliament in New Zealand and applications are also open for the paid parliamentary internship in the Office of the Clerk of Tynwald.

Youth Parliament

The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) of the Isle of Man is looking to fund one person to attend the opportunity of a lifetime to travel to New Zealand and attend the 12th Commonwealth Youth Parliament (CYP). CYP is an annual event that is held in a different Commonwealth region each year. Up to 66 young people from across the Commonwealth will experience various aspects of parliamentary democracy and have the unique opportunity to connect with other young people from around the world.

In 2024 CYP will be hosted by the Parliament of New Zealand from 2 to 5 September 2024. The CPA Isle of Man Branch will nominate someone to attend, and if the application is successful, will fund one young person to attend this event.

If you are aged 18-29 (at the time of the event), confident and articulate, with an interest in the Commonwealth and political affairs, and would be interested in being nominated; please apply by email setting out in no more than 200 words:

(a) how you would benefit from the experience; and

(b) how the Isle of Man would benefit from your attendance at the event.

All emails must be received before 5pm on Thursday 20^th June 2024. Send the email to enquiries@tynwald.org.im with the subject line: Commonwealth Youth Parliament 2024.

Note that depending on travel dates the successful applicant will need to be available between the 1 – 7 September 2024, and be willing and able to travel to New Zealand, which will require at least six months before the expiration of a valid passport. There are no visa requirements for UK or IOM passport holders.

Internship

Tynwald has been offering a 12-month parliamentary internship programme since 2014.  The intern position in the Office of the Clerk of Tynwald provides an individual with the opportunity to gain meaningful experience of the full range of activities and services undertaken in a small modern parliament. The role has proved attractive to younger people in the past, but there is no age limit and applications are welcome from people of any age.

What is the CPA?

The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) is one of the oldest established organisations in the Commonwealth. Founded in 1911, it is a membership association which brings together Members, irrespective of gender, race, religion or culture, who are united by community of interest, respect for the rule of law and individual rights and freedoms, and by the pursuit of the positive ideals of parliamentary democracy. The Isle of Man Branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association was formed in 1937.
