Celebrating Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee
30/05/2022
To mark the Platinum Jubilee weekend, a celebration of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s 70 years on the throne, the President of Tynwald, The Hon L D Skelly, has reflected on the example of service the Lord of Mann has set for our Island.
In her visit as Queen to the Island and Tynwald Court in 1955, Her Majesty stated:
“I am especially proud to preside at the oldest Parliament in all the countries of which I am Queen”
Mr President said:
“As President of Tynwald I too feel the sense of pride Her Majesty, the Lord of Mann, stated when presiding over a sitting of our Island’s parliament.
After 70 years of service, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, has shown her devotion and loyalty to the people of this Island and across the world has been remarkable; her example impeccable.
I know that many of us will be taking part in Jubilee festivities this week, and I wish everyone an enjoyable bank holiday weekend celebrating the historic occasion of her Platinum Jubilee.” As a self-governing Crown Dependency, the Isle of Man maintains a constitutional relationship with the United Kingdom through the Crown. The Isle of Man Purchase Act, or the Revestment Act, was granted Royal Assent on 10th May 1765 when the Island was officially transferred from the control of the ruling Athol family to the Crown. As Head of State Her Majesty is known as the Lord of Mann, a title reflecting the Isle of Man’s unique relationship with the Crown.
