A Female Perspective: The Path to Election
27/02/2025
In support of International Women’s Day, the Office of the Clerk of Tynwald will host an event on Friday, 7th March 2025 to explore the challenges women may face when pursuing publicly elected roles.
The format will be an interactive panel discussion led by Ann Corlett MHK and guest speakers, Dr Catriona Mackie, and Garff Commissioner, Melanie Christian.
- Ann Corlett MHK was first elected for Douglas Central in 2016 and then re-elected in 2021. She has held various Tynwald and Government roles during her time as a Member of the House of Keys. As the Tynwald representative for the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians, Ann has experience from across the world of the challenges women face when considering standing for election.
- Dr Catriona Mackie has recently completed an extended research project on Women in Manx Politics which included exploring the experience of women standing for, and being elected to, Tynwald since 2000. Details on the project led by Professor Peter Edge and Dr Alex Powell from Oxford Brookes University, are available here: https://www.brookes.ac.uk/research/units/hss/projects/women-in-manx-politics
- Melanie Christian was successfully elected in the 2021 local authority elections for the Lonan district of the local authority of Garff. Melanie has been an advocate for women entering the political arena and actively encourages more women to pursue careers in politics.
