Port-e-Chee and Tynwald District Guides has been awarded Best Turned Out Unit and Isle of Man Sea Cadet Samantha Hassall Best Turned Out Individual on parade at the 2018 Tynwald Day ceremony. In recognition, the President of Tynwald, the Hon Steve Rodan MLC, presented the Guiding unit with a signed certificate, an engraved plaque and a £50 donation to the unit’s nominated charity, Rebecca House, and a certificate and winner’s shield to Sea Cadet Samantha Hassall, whose name has been added to the Kerruish Shield.

Speaking on behalf of Port-e-Chee and Tynwald District Guides guider Kelly Haynes said: ‘The girls are extremely mature for their age so took the Tynwald Day ceremony in their stride. It was a real honour to be part of such an important event; it was an experience that meant a lot to all of us.’
Girl Guiding Isle of Man Island Commissioner Karen Walker added: ‘We are all very proud of the girls’ achievement and I am delighted that they have received such distinguished recognition for the part they played in the Tynwald Day proceedings.’

Ramsey Grammar School student Samantha, 17, said: ‘Taking part in the Tynwald Day ceremony is a massive privilege for the unit; it’s the biggest event of the year for us. Such is the prestige attached to the event that Sea Cadet personnel from the north west area come to the Isle of Man to train us and many choose to return to spectate on the day.’

Samantha, who will soon become a Sea Cadet staff member, added: ‘I joined the Sea Cadets when I was 11, and initially the appeal was the amazing variety of activities on offer, but since then I’ve gained a whole range of qualifications that will be really useful in whatever future career I pursue.’

Presenting the awards Mr President said: ‘It is important that youth organisations be given the opportunity to be part of the formal proceedings of Tynwald Day, to showcase their precision training and to be recognised for their valuable contribution to our National Day celebrations. The Port-e-Chee and Tynwald District Guides and Samantha are credits to their respective units and conducted themselves with a professionalism well beyond their years. I congratulate them on their achievements and for adding so admirably to the pageantry, spectacle and tradition of Tynwald Day.’
