The Social Affairs Policy Review Committee, a Standing Committee of Tynwald, is continuing its inquiry into the operation of personal capability assessments but the work will not be completed until after the General Election.
Mr Cretney MLC, Chairman of the Committee said:
Shortly after the March sitting, we issued a call for evidence which received a substantial number of responses. We would like to thank everyone who responded. The Committee has already heard public oral evidence on two occasions. We have learnt a great deal from these and we understand that this topic is extensive and complex. More time is needed to undertake further analysis and to gather additional evidence. We have noted the withdrawal of Mrs Beecroft’s motion at the June sitting of Tynwald on the advice of HM Acting Attorney General. We also understand that the Treasury Minister intends to make a further statement at the July sitting of Tynwald. In order to take these things into account the Committee’s work will have to continue at least until the autumn.
Even though it is a disappointment to the Committee that we have had to delay the report to Tynwald, we hope that Tynwald Members and the public will accept the overriding importance of ensuring that this issue is thoroughly investigated.”
The Social Affairs Policy Review Committee, is one of three Standing Committees of Tynwald Court established in October 2011 with a wide scrutiny remit. The current members of the Committee are Mr David Cretney MLC (Chair), the Hon Steve Rodan SHK and Mr Geoffrey Boot MHK. By operation of Tynwald Standing Orders they will cease to be members of the Committee on 11th August 2016. Members will be elected or re-elected to the Committee after the General Election.
