The President of Tynwald, the Hon Clare Christian OBE, has announced her decision to retire.
In retiring, Madam President, the first woman to have held the position, will bring to a close a parliamentary career in Tynwald spanning some 29 years. She represented the sheading of Ayre in the House of Keys from 1980 to 1986 and was elected a Member of the Legislative Council in 1993, re-elected in 1998, 2003 and 2008 and on July 12 2011 was elected President of Tynwald for a five-year term.
She will leave office on July 18, 2016, the eve of the July sitting of Tynwald Court when the first item of business will be for Members to vote to elect her successor.
Madam President said: ‘In a matter of weeks my term of office comes to an end. Members will then be electing a Presiding Officer for the next five-year term and there is naturally speculation about prospective candidates. After many years in Tynwald Court in a variety of roles I have decided that the time has come to step down and have advised my Tynwald colleagues that I shall not be seeking re-election in July.’
