Acting Attorney General to give Evidence

The Standing Orders Committee of Tynwald intends to take oral evidence from HM Acting Attorney General on th subject of parliamentary privilege. The evidence will be taken at 2.30pm on Thursday 17th October in the Legislative Council Chamber; members of the public are welcome to attend.

At the October 2012 sitting of Tynwald, the Court resolved:

That the First Report of the Economic Committee 2012-13 [PP 0109/12] be received and that the following recommendation be approved -

That the matter of powers of Tynwald and its Committees to send for persons and papers, including power to punish for contempts arising from untruthful evidence, be referred to the Standing Orders Committee for examination and report; and that the Committee be empowered to take written and oral evidence pursuant to sections 3 and 4 of the Tynwald Proceedings Act 1876, as amended.

This inquiry is a general one aimed at establishing what the powers of Tynwald and its Committees are and what changes, if any, need to be made to the method of enforcement of Tynwald orders.
