Grandparents' Rights: Call for Evidence

In the November 2019 sitting of Tynwald Court, a motion was approved to refer the Petition for Redress of Mr and Mrs Miles concerning the rights of grandparents to the Social Affairs Policy Review Committee, a Standing Committee of Tynwald.

The Committee would now like to invite written submissions from anyone who wishes to comment on this matter. The petition can be found on the Tynwald website here. Background to the issues raised in the petition can be found in two press articles submitted to the Committee by the petitioners (here) and in the article “Hidden heartbreak as one million children lose grandparents due to family estrangement”, Express 5th October 2019, available on the Express website here.

Policy Review Committees are limited by their remits; they cannot become involved in or advise on individual cases, they may only use such cases to demonstrate the impact of policy and legislation on the public. Committees may listen to all witnesses and are willing to do so in confidence. This helps to improve a Committee’s understanding of the matters it is investigating.

Submissions should be sent to the address below by 5th February 2020. Email is preferred but hard copy is equally acceptable.

The Members elected to the Committee by Tynwald are Mr David Cretney MLC (Chairman), Mr Martyn Perkins MHK, and Ms Julie Edge MHK.

The progress of the Committee’s inquiry can be followed via the Tynwald website
